How far in advance do you start planning?

I love planning for a vacation so I start as soon as I come back from the last one. I find this is really part of the trip for me. Not everyone likes this stage.

I would say between two to three months ahead would be about right to plan a trip out yourself.

If you are not going solo it could be a joint effort and you would want to get everyone involved in all stages.

There are always people who would like to just turn it all over to a travel agent and not plan out any of their trip themselves. Just check out the latest package deals and go.

Other types like the fun of lots of surprises and don't get a bit stressed when things go wrong...they rather like it and it makes for great stories to tell for years to come.
Planning of course will not guarantee that absolutely nothing unexpected will happen when travelling, and it's a good idea to leave a little time for  a spontaneity.
